The Location:
Beechwood Court is set in an idyllic location close to Marie Louise Gardens which is one of Didsbury's best kept secrets (see below). This peaceful location is perfect for walking into Didsbury village by way of some of its finer tree-lined avenues whilst the proximity to Palatine Road allows you to readily access the main road network for the city, the motorways and the international airport.
Just across Holme Road you will find the little-known Marie Louise Memorial Gardens. This garden of 4¾ acres was part of the gardens of the home of Mr and Mrs Johann Georg Silkenstadt. It was donated by the Silkenstadts in 1905 in memory of their daughter Marie Lousie who died in 1891 aged 26; she having pined away after her husband had been lost at sea. It's a simple but secluded garden, bounded by ornamental walls and mature dense shrubs and horse chestnuts whilst internally paths criss-cross the lawns. There are many unusual botanical specimens including a maidenhair tree. Many of the visitors come here for peace and calm.
If you had been walking in the area in 1918 or sitting in the park then the chances were that you would have met a young German submarine commander. Captured the year before, he had been granted parole (on condition that he didn't try to escape) because he was an officer and a gentleman. He took an apartment in one of the large villas on Palatine Road and was often seen walking in the area and park. This man was to become Germany's final fuehrer, Admiral Karl Doenitz.
If Doentiz enjoyed the beauty of the park then it is likely that he would have strolled down to the river, either to the weir at Northenden where regattas were held in those years or to the even more attractive point on the river at Darley Avenue in West Didsbury. Here the river almost doubles back on itself to present a breathtaking view at it snakes around the boundary of the golf course. We recommend a early morning view whilst the mist is still on the ground. The river offers fine walks and cycle rides in either direction.
